Atlanta police say they are investigating an incident involving a man being chased on a scooter in Midtown Atlanta on September 10.

According to the APD, officers saw an unknown man riding an electric scooter through traffic in the area of 10th Street NW and Techwood Drive NW.

When officers approached the scooter rider, he took off on the scooter and rode between the vehicles, APD said.

Officers chased him to Spring Street NW and Peachtree Place NW, where he abandoned the scooter and ran to a nearby Publix.

Additional officers responded to the area and eventually located the man in a nearby parking garage. He was taken into custody without further incident and transported to the city jail. According to APD, he faces multiple charges.

A video of the chase, which clearly shows an Atlanta Police Department patrol car driving down the sidewalk along Spring Street, was posted to ATLScoop's Instagram page and quickly received thousands of views, likes and comments.

Many people criticized the APD for riding on the sidewalk. They felt that the officer riding on the sidewalk should also be arrested for endangering pedestrians.

Several hours after the video was posted, Atlanta police responded, saying they were aware of the video and were investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

They announced in a press release to the media that their Office of Professional Standards would investigate the incident.
